Yea I hear ya. I've been keen to get another one under way but just can't find the money. Im building a replacement body for someone though which is something I guess

Stewmac will have everything you need. Australian luthier supplies should have everything as well

    Default PAF Humbucker winding specs

Hi all, I'd like to share my pickup experience with anyone who's interested.

The original PAFs had more windings on the slug coil than the polepiece coil, and both coils are unpotted. Old PAFs weren't made in separate neck and bridge-position models, and their DC resistance varied from 7-9K ohms.

I followed the instructions that came with the StewMac humbucker kits, and I highly recommend these kits as they are excellent quality and good value when you consider that less than $40 you can produce pickups that perform as good if not better that any you purchase anywhere.

I wound my PAFs as follows.

My Choice of wire in this case was AWG 43 plain enamelled because it's was what I happened have, and they are wired as standard 50's, no fancy coil taps.

    Neck pickup, Mid 7K Ohms.
Slug Coil 4k Ohms At 4466 Turns
Pole Piece Coil 3.5k Ohms At 3744 Turns.

    Bridge pickup, Low 8K Ohms.
Slug Coil 4.25k Ohms At 4828 Turns.
Pole Piece Coil 4k Ohms At 4466 Turns.

I'm not a connoisseur of humbuckers but these words have been used to describe the sound of my Les Paul build by all the musicians that have played it. Awesome, Magnificent, Ballsy, Incredible, Sharp, Crisp, Clean, Bright, bla bla bla. These were my first diy pickups, and if I can do it anyone can cause I aint that smart.

    Regards to all

    thanks wal
added to my collection of guitars i would love to build but probly never get to

very high quality drawings by the way
    what do you use??

i have been having problems with corel 11 being inaccurate
i know corel is a toy and really need something a little more serious
the price of autocad is way beyond my needs technically as well as financially - even turbocad is pricey
i am looking at some of the open source offerings which initially look quite interesting
    ray c
dunno what's more fun, buyin' the tools or usin' em'

Yes well If you're already reasonably experienced with using cads then you'll have more success than I did as I had to learn every thing from scratch, but even if you have some difficulties with it I would encourage perseverance as it really is a good and accurate bit of software, it wont do 3D solids but it's great for drawing blue prints. If you have trouble with it let s know n I may be able to help you with land line tuition .

There is a good 3D freebie out there that Oz put me on to but I cant for the life of me think of the name of it, blown too many neuros on the red stuff and naturally I haven't used it yet. Oooo Oooo I just remembered it, It's Blender, thank the Gods now I can have another drink

hehe and me a teetotaller just coz i dont like the stuff not any judgement on them that does

i have used various vector drawing applications since the early 90's mainly for design work and have a basic understanding of how things work
also dabbled with 3d studiomax - i found that 3d work was time consuming and the results were not a huge help when considering the effort required -
for visualisation of a new guitar design it may be useful but have not felt the need to use 3d thus far

it is very useful however to have a dimensioned full scale set of drawings that can be scaled to a page [a4] or tile printed full size [this is where corel fails]
i like to tile print the pages, trim them back to the printer margins and stick them down in sequence on a sheet of mdf
i use a grid to help line things up - it is easy work to hack the shape out with a jig saw
i then shave it carefully down with a spindle sander to create a master pattern for cutting templates
works fine for a body outline but corel really lets me down for a neck layout over 3 A4's

Wow that's dedication for ya, I just save the AVG file to PDF and E-Mail it to my local print shop and they print it on a big f(*&^#n sheet for me and then I pick it up and pay the $8.00.
