| | Good Woods For Builds Hi All. Great little forum going here, wish I had found it months ago now. I've been spending the past few days browsing through posts and everyone seems really helpful, which gets me on to the point of this post.
Could someone please give me advice on where I can buy decent timber for building guitars. Up until now, I have only built two guitars, both I had necks for already, and built the bodies from ash (one vic ash, one tassie ash). Yes, they where bloody heavy, but ash was easily available from the average timber yeard.
Now, I am keen to go a bit more advanced and build the whole thing from ground up, so I am looking to obtain some nice maple sticks to start with. I plan to build a neck through, 5pc neck (maple, and possibly walnut, or similar dark hardwood).
Any help or advice on where I might be able to look would be greatly appreciated.
I am in Melbourne by the way. |

| | Hi Hammered,
I just joined and i already get to make my first post...Woohoo!!
Guitar woods is in sydney but they have a prompt, inexpesive mailing service.
And they sell queensland maple neck blanks.
They also do a fretboard slotting service, etc. http://www.guitarwoods.com.au/catalog/index.php
And if you don't mind shopping overseas you could try Luthier's Merchantile International.
They have a mail out service for international customers.
And their prices are competitive. http://www.lmii.com/
Cheers,

They have heaps of good stuff
Everything seems cheap, but once they add GST and shipping it gets pretty expensive!

| | Thanks for all the info guys. I'll take a look at some of those sites in the next few days.
I checked http://www.luthierssupplies.com.au/ just now, it seems they are out of stock on suitable length neck blanks for a neck-thru
When I get the chance, I'll probably head all the way out to Vermont for a look at Mathews Timbers stock. Bit of a treck for me from Moonee Ponds with no license. Will have to convince my girlfriend that browsing through timber would make for a fun Saturday arvo (yeah, right). |

And secondly, The 3" x 3" stock for neck thru's is in a rebundled pack under another pallet in the storage area. Not accessible at the moment.
The only way you'll get to sort through that is if you call them up, speak to Ian (top bloke b.t.w.) and ask him to forklift the pallet into the sorting area for you, then you'll be sweet. Give him at least one day's notice too.
Just trying to avoid disappointment.
Mind you the Qld walnut is VERY accessible
cheers, Stu | |
