what do you use to highlight your inlay outlines
I'm about about to do some inlay work, testing first ofcourse, and wondered what those of you that do inlaying on your instruments use to highlight a scribed inlay outline. I have the Patterson book and he recommends tempura paint. I've heard that chalk has been used satisfactorily also. I can't think of a cheaper option to chalk other than nothing at all
. So, I'm interested in what you use and any tips you may have regarding this.

I've used a variety of methods:
Epoxy glue mixed with a little black stain works well, as does black nitrocellulose lacquer (both take a while to dry though). I've also tried black superglue, but it doesn't seem to work as well. It doesn't seem quite black enough I think.
Stewart Macdonald sell a product specifically for the purpose, but I haven't tried it.
I haven't heard of chalk being used. I'm surprised it works at all.

Oh, I didn't mean that. What I meant was once the inlay shape is scribed on the board, what do you use to highlight the area that will be routed/hogged out into a cavity eg. tempura paint or the like to highlight the scribed area for visibility while removing waste.

Oooooooh.
Oh well, in that case, yes! I do use chalk if I'm highlighting a scribed line in ebony or some other dark timber. I draw it on, then wipe it off, thereby leaving a white line behind. It works fine. I haven't tried the tempura paint. I don't even know what it is.

Chalk for me too.
white chalk on darker boards and coloured on light boards.
Haven't tried tempura paint and probably won't as chalk works well on tight tolerances.
