General Guitar Wood Questions
Hi all,
Can anyone suggest woods that would be used to make the neck and body of a bass guitar that has a warm, mellow and bright jazz tone?
Anything would be appreciated.

hi,
I recently seen a bass that was made that would suit your needs. It was a five stringer
It was a thru neck. The neck was figured blackwood, figured tassie oak and rock maple with rosewood fingerboard.
Body was chambered blackwood, with figured blackwood caps.
It sounds and looks awesome. Id say the pickup and amp would be more of a concern then timber.

Thanks
Thanks for the advice guys,
@luxemburg, sounds great, any idea what its called?
Am i right in saying that blackwood is a harder wood, and that harder woods don't give the sound that im looking for?

It was a custom build. The same shape as Carl Thompson's ten million dollar bass.
If you really want I can get photos.
I would think blackwood would be perfect for what you want. You are in tassie so that makes it an even greater choice.
What wood/woods were you thinking of?

I'll be fine without photos
I was thinking of softer woods, and thought they would give me the tone. But your the second person to suggest black wood so ill stick with that.
Do you think it would be good for the neck?

Blackwood is great for necks. For a bass I reckon you should laminate it with another or a few bits of wood, especially if its for a neck thru. - just for looks.
Figured tassie oak and walnut would look good.

Although it would be nice to say it's all Tasmanian, i am really just looking for the best tone i can, so i might use an ebony or a maple, any other ideas?
