    Default HARD SHELLAC for Luthiers

I have had a couple of reports of crazing on guitars that have been finished with our Hard Shellac. To this end I have altered the formula for Hard Shellac and from today on it will have a plasticiser added, to allow for the finish to move with the timber as it expands and contracts under all the extremes a guitar and all other stringed instruments are subjected to..

It will still be as tough and durable but will now move more freely with the timber due to the addition of a little elasticity in the form of the plasticiser.

    Cheers - Neil

    Hi Neil,

Will there be some indication of the changeover of formulation? eg use by date or label change we can refer to? I applaud you for looking after your customers!

    Thx

Anything with use by date after 1/08/09 But initial bottles will be labelled as NEW Improved, or similar.

    Question

    Thanks for this improvement Neil.

I've used the product on 4 acoustic guitars I've completed in the last 9 months, and had just noticed how badly crazed the earliest one had become, especially on the neck and back. A quick trip to the shed, pad loaded with a luna mix (25%) and alternate metho only, and all fixed by the end of the day!

So now my question to you is - with the new improved product, will I be able to use it on top of the previous version if or when it is necessary to retouch the others?

Oh, and yes, I have been a member of this forum for quite a while and this is my first post, you see, I visit almost every day and there has always been an existing answer to my questions and even answers to questions I didn't know to ask. Just shows the depth of knowledge on this forum.

Neil will reply with the final word on this one, but if it were me I'd probably remove the shellac youve already applied and start from scratch with the improved formula product.

    Wink

Thanks for that Kiwigeo, I would prefer not to remove the finish on 4 guitars especially when they look really good now!
As it was mainly the back and the neck that had the problem, it's not the end of the world to redo just these parts.
Any how, maybe Neil will have some hands on experience - in the meantime, I'm going to replace my current stock with the new product ready for the next new one!
