    Default Help Wanted

I am not an instrument maker, but I tried, just for fun really, to make a sort of Dulcimer- ( I think it's called). It has six strings for which I used Gut Guitar strings threaded through the head in the manner of a violin. I used Redgum first and it seemed that the grain was too short as they tended to break. However, I found some hardwood which is strong enough, but the trouble is, I can't seem to make them stay when I get enough strain on them to tune. They just slip back. If I make them tighter, I can;t turn them at all. I tried rubbing resin on the shaft of the tuner, so that it would grip, but nothing seems to work.
I have just about given up. Has anyone any suggestions as to what I could try.
    Thanks everyone.
    Dennis.

I have seen some geared tuners that fit into violin tuning peg holes. Not sure who sells them but I would try Stewmac, lmii and international violin first.

The other day I described to my daughter how to find something in the garage by saying "It's right near my big saw". A few minutes later she came back to ask: "Do you mean the black one, the green one, or the blue one?".

Try ebony or rosewood pegs. Also try roughening up peg with fine sandpaper.

Its possible the taper on peg and peg hole are not optimally matched.

Hope you get the problem nailed.

You could try peg grease. Violin, viola etc players put it on their tuning pegs. It manages to both make them not slip while also not allowing them to seize/jam. It's only a few dollars. We sell it at the shop I work at - "Optimum Percussion". Ring us on 02 9744 1829 and we can send some out.

    Cheers,
    Tony

Liz, your msg will go only to the PM box, but I get e-mail advice whenever a new post is recieved for a forum topic I've previously made a submission to - I guess this is standard, and it may depend on his computer setup too. Best of luck.
