Help needed for guitar finish
Hi Guys. I need some advice please.
I can't seem to find an Australian source for any locally produced waterborne clear finish, labelled as suitable for instrument finishing.
I can, of course, import it or pay the premium for someone else to import it, but I'm hoping that someone can tell me that they have had success with spraying al locally sourced product. I would have thought that something we produce here would be at least as good as the USA or UK products?
Cheers,
Greg.

Thanks for the link China. I'll give them a call.
Any opinions out there from other builders who may have sprayed Mirotec WB?
I note that that they list two products in the range, a furniture and a bench top finish, both listed as suitable for musical instruments.

Yep. Gave them a call and got told "either product should be ok for guitar". That didn't really fill me with confidence so I asked about can sizes with a view to trying some of each.
Minimum can size is 5 litres for semi gloss, but they won't do either product in gloss unless you order 200 (yes I said 200) litres!
Ouch!!

Ask them if there is a furniture factory near you that uses the product you may be able to purchase a smaller quantity if you take your own container.

I use a waterborne from the UK by Rothko & Frost made specifically for guitars. GuitarAust, https://www.guitaraust.com.au/finish...-lacquers.html was bringing it but it wasn't moving so they stopped. They still have some but not satin, but more importantly, he says if the demand is there he will start bringing it in again. Alternatively, if you are not in a hurry he will being it in with his next order. I like it because it is so easy to clean up after, but you need to be careful on hot days because the gun tip can clog quickly. Just checked and he has tints & colours left as well as sealer. Hope this help.
If more people started using the non toxic waterborne instead of the toxic nitro, we would be able to get the waterborne here. I see this as a failure of our environmental regulations allowing to use of products banned overseas such as 2K

I noticed there was an Aust company in Sydney selling a version of Nitro for guitars, and they have a range of WB lacquers as well . . and the price of the Nitro I was looking at was pretty good, comparitively . . so maybe the WB is cheaper too ? . . they are Durobond - A wholly Australian owned and managed paints company . .
And Chris from Highline Guitars is swearing by Crystalac WB Brite tone instrument finish , as the new standard in hard, safe finishes .
Its not available locally , but they will ship (you'd have to be keen) from the U.S. . . . and Crystalac have their own sanding sealer and filler to match. . . The company is (I think) called chevron , but here is their contact number. - 02 94530231 +61 2 9453 0231

Just came across this thread. There are various types of waterbased coatings, as with any types of coating systems. Some better than others. As there are some months from the original post to now, when it is time to do your next guitar, an option would be to try an natural coating. Again, there are many "natural" coatings. https://www.livos.com.au/musical-instruments here you will see some examples of some very good looking guitars.
