    Default Les Paul

Hi, Im new to guitar making, Im thinking of making a Les Paul.

    Just a few questions:

About how much would it cost to make a gibson set neck copy?

Would it be possible for a beginner? I have a mate who is a carpender/builder so he could help me out and with it and help out with tools as well.

    Thanks.

for the wood it depends on what wood you use obviously. being in australia queensland maple might be a good choice, as alot of people say its a good australian substitute for mahogany (what les paul necks are made from)

they sell plenty of qld maple on this site for necks if you want to check it out.

Dont forget to get your arm broken and reset to a permanent bend if you want to play like him

Les Paul isn't just a guitar. It's name of the guitarist who invented that guitar. He had a problem with a broken arm that didn't heal properly. Didn't affect his playing though - he was pretty darn good.

$500 + electronics huh? You're looking at close to $1,000. For that money you might be better off with an Epiphone version of the Les Paul. Of course that's less fun than building one......

Might be cheaper to build an acoustic

Building your own guitar will often end up costing you more than going off and buying an off the shelf factory made instrument. That's not the point....a guitar you've built yourself doesn't compare with a characterless clone pumped out of some factory in Asia.

Here's a site a guy's put up about building an LP copy, I *think* he's from Brazil.

    http://members.fortunecity.com/jtfish/lpc/cvr/cover.htm

http://www.projectguitar.com has been invaluable to be for learning the basics, it's got alot of sites dedicated to the start to finish build of various guitars. Go to Reference / Build Sites.

I'm about to build something not far off a Les Paul, the wood is coming from Wood World down on the Gold Coast at this stage - looking at around $200 for the bare timber, and that's Honduras Mahogany for the body, 5 piece laminated neck with Canadian Rock Maple and strips of Walnut, neck through construction, Ebony fretboard. A little more elaborate than a regular Les Paul construction.

Don't forget you're also going to need tools to do the job, the raw cost of the material for a first guitar isn't the only thing you're buying.
