Luthier Required URGENTLY for small job.
My name is Adam and i am building my first bass guitar. All i am able to build is the body and not the neck due to the perfection needed for it. Therefor i have been trying for almost the whole year to find someone who is able and willing to build one to my specifications. If anyone is able to do this or is aware of someone who is definatly willing to do this, please help! I am sick and tired of chassing loose ends for week and months to no avail. Thank you

Necks aren't that hard and considering you've already pulled out a body, the next step in the whole
learning process is the neck. My first ever build was the whole build and I'm a firm believer that if you're wanting to learn to build a guitar then you go the whole way for a full learning experience.
Why has it taken a whole year? Is it the cost factor ?
More info if you could please, Adam Even pics. of the body you're wanting to mate up with a neck .
Also let everyone know your specifications for the neck too.
There are a few Bass builders up in Qld that belong to this forum.
And welcome to the forum,mate

Thanks for the quick responce. I am a part timer at Hungry Jacks and have been for three years. (no life, i know but im only seventeen) I pay board and get terriable pay anyway so cost has deffinatly been a factor though i am trying to disregard the pricing factor for this. As for building the neck myself, im doing it through my grade 12 furnighing class where my teacher can help out in the process as he has made an electric guitar years before for tafe or uni(?). I wont get much time to work on it and have, to tell the truth, hardly even started yet. All i have been able to do is cut out a template for routing, and collect some parts including timber.
now the neck: i was going for something along the lines of the Ibanez SR5000E Prestige 5pc SR4 Prestige Wenge/Bubinga neck due to its length (24 frets) and thickness. The thinest i have felt. I tried to get one ordered but they are available for warranty only.
Specs needed: 24 frets, THINNN, 2X2 config for headstock suitable for Gotoh heavy duty tuners, non-basic dots (forgot the term, the mother of pearl type) sorry) i want something other than just basic dots and double dots on 12 and 24.
If available the headstock to resemble a BC Rick even, as i believe (you may not) that it would suite the body. Neck design Below

I am making a bass version of the Ibanez Xiphos(?). just a little bigger and thicker... and of course more awsome. link for Xiphos below

Thank you for your quick responce's and im glad to be a part of this forum! I hope i answered all the question, sorry if i didnt i got up at 4am for work (GAY)

hey welcome to the forum..
Im building a xiphos 7 string at the moment. The necks really arent as hard as you would think. The 7 is my 2nd build but 1st neck. i thought it would be alot harder but its actually pretty easy and really fun too..

its when you get to the fretting that it starts to get expensive...
making the neck is pretty simple....
buy a pre slotted board...
buy a neck blank..
im sure you have a bandsaw at school yea?
see your already have access to power tools a majority of us dont have.... lol
can do a whole neck with a bandsaw and a router and a straight edge (piece of mdf or wood)
you probably have access to a drill press at school too dont you? lol
there you go..
can do your machine head holes with that....
your school will have a selection of router bits too i would assume....
see you have it easy
now do it haha
i am about to scrap a roughed out neck i was making for a 7 string,
but thats a straight inline headstock and i dont know if it will be long enough for a 34 inch bass neck *shrugs*
assuming your doing a 34 inch scale lolLast edited by Andrew_B; 5th July 2009 at 09:12 PM. Reason: net crapped out as i posted this the first time so none of the spaces worked..... fixed it :)

I managed to get one good bloke from this forum to ask around some guys he knows about possibly building a neck for me. Thats a start but if all else fails i think i might have to resort to do it myself! Hopefully it wont, as i have serious time restraints!

Warmoth's definitely the way to go if you don't want to make it yourself. I doubt you'll find a local luthier to build you just a neck and if you do he'll probably charge up the nose to make it worth his while (think $700+) since its the hardest part of a build. Someone who builds and sells full instruments for 3k or more will definitely not make a custom neck for prices comparable to Warmoths.
