my mandolin rib shaving beam/clamp
Hello, I thought I would post a pic of my rib clamp for planing.
Its a cedar 4x4 inch post with two indentations chiseled into the sides so that pieces of soft white pine act as clamps to hold the rib in place while I plane it to desired thickness.
There is also an indentation chiseled into the face of the post in which a piece of soft pine is fit. This acts as a stop to keep the rib from sliding with the plane.
This works well. The soft pine stop and lateral clamps can be hit with plane blade and there is no problem.. it is soft wood with appropriate grain direction.
The rib I am working here is American Poplar. The unseen end of the beam sits in doorway of my workshop.. I sit on the beam and pull Japanese plane towards me.. sometimes after using drawknife in the same manner.
In my shop, the beam stands out of the way or can be used like a traditional Japanese planing beam at angle.
