nut seating
I have a bass guitar which was given to me with a broken nut. The broken nut was also glued in with a lot of glue. When I knocked the old nut out there was a little bit of rosewood stuck to the bottom of the nut.
I want to file the slot but I dont have a nut seating file. I have some jewelers file bit I found they flex a little when I use them and my nut slot isn't dead flat.
Its a fender style 3mm nut slot. Is there another way I can do this without buying an overpriced file from someone like stewmac?

Can you use the side of a flat file?
Or some emery cloth or wet and dry over a piece of metal?

You can also buy bone nut blanks and make a whole new nut for a few bucks. there are ways to fill rhe old slots with bicarb of sada and ca glue then refile them but a new nut would be my pick.

Try using some feeler gauges and cutting slots into them to make a saw with a Dremel or the like. I've also used a hacksaw blade and ground down the sides with some 120 grit as well. Coping saw blades aren't strong enough.
A set of good nut files is a once off investment but I agree they are expensive and you want to get the value."We must never become callous. When we experience the conflicts ever more deeply we are living in truth. The quiet conscience is an invention of the devil." - Albert Schweizer

Hi guys
I got the slot filed nice and flat. I ended up using a mixture of small files I have. Not ideal but I just took my time and got the job done.
The nut goes in nice and tight. Filed some string slots and tested my intonation. All good. Happy me.
Next time I may buy a nut seating file or maybe even make my own.
Cheers
