Default Quality of birch wood for stringed instruments

Hi everybody. I just learnt through a link in another thread that birch is a timber particularly prized in Spain etc. for stringed instruments. Is it the same here? If so, how do knots affect its quality? How should I mill a log to achieve the best results for instrument making? Thanks for any advice.
    Cheers
    Frank

I know nothing about Birch, but if you want it for instruments, any timber is at its best when sawn on the quater, for the best stability and stiffnessfor the weight.

Knots? They arent a good thing to have in tonewood..especially in a top. Ive just finished a classical guitar and had to deal with a few knots in the opportunity grade Indian Rosewood I used for the sides. A bit of superglue stabilised the knots but they still dont look too pretty.

Dont know much about using Birch as a tonewood...I havent heard of it used alot by luthiers.

Thanks Sleake and Kiwigeo. (Better late than never!) Not having had replies for 2 weeks I forgot about this thread and just found it again while looking for something else. Did not mean to be rude, sorry it took so long.
