Default What sort of dirt is this?

    Hi.

I just finished shaping a headstock on birdseye maple using a router & template.

I think I've got some slight tear out grain effect on one side. It is also discoloured and rough to the touch. Pics below.

I've tried cleaning it up with naptha but it's still visible. The rest of the job is un blemished....

What is this & how do I clean it up?

    Hey,
I'm sure thats just the end grain. Try sanding it with 80grit sand paper and move up to 220grit. This could smooth out the rough area. I have had similar tear out with maple before.

I really like that Birdseye neck, looks great. Are you having a Birdseye fretboard?
More pics of the build please.

    Cheers,
    Deano

    No. Ebony.

The Birdseye fretboards look beautiful, ( I have a Warmoth tele) but I'm not sold on the feel of them.

I like the feel of ebony fretboards..sort of smoother than rosewood.

...and if you get a really nice jet black piece it looks great too.

    OK.

I'll try sanding back a bit more. I just now tried a rubber but it really didn't do much.

    Thanks.

Hey, this just looks like a bit of rough end grain which picks up dust and gives the different colour. A rubber will just leave bits behind. Just sand it out like Deano says.
