    Default just started another build

Hi all, I've been a bit quiet on this section of the site for a while. The last 5 months has been all over the place (with one incident a silly accident hurting my back pretty bad). Anyway, I finally got back into a guitar that I started earlier this year, and have had in my head for months now. Very early days. Did some more work on it this arvo. The body I am using, a very nice chap (ex luthier) gave me a template for a PRS body. I am not really sure how I am going to do the taper on the sides of the body, like PRS bodies have. Maybe just a heap of sanding. I am going to use two P90 soapbox pickups on this guitar. The body is Queensland Maple, the neck and fretboard are Hornbeam, love that timber.

Very early days yet. And the acoustic build I also started earlier this year is still sitting around waiting for more work to be done on it. It will happen,

Hey Paul, you might get good results profiling the PRS with your angle grinder fitted with sanding flap discs. I have great results with them. Start at 36 grit to rough the shape then 60, 80, 120 to get an almost final finish. Then hand sand up to whatever you like.

Hi paul, nice job so far. I don't suppose you could give me a run down on how to rout the groove for the truss rod? I've had a few ideas of my own but they are probably over complicated knowing me.

Hey Kiwi, join this group on FB HTTPS://www.facebook.com/groups/ProjectElectricGuitar/
heaps of good info about building guitars. Mostly solid bodies. Plenty of hints and advice about truss rods and installation of them.
    cheers

    Hi Shedhand and Kiwi,

Sorry, I hadnt checked this thread for a while, didn't think there was any activity on it. With your interest I took 3 more pics today to show you where it is up to. I think I am happy with the profile of the body, maybe not as much contour as I would have liked, but, it's ok. That was a good suggestion about the angle grinder. Actually I did end up using my angle grinder on it. I totally forgot I had bought this attachment for it years ago, put it away and forgot about it. It's a metal disc/wheel with small chunks of metal all over the face of it, used to very quickly rough down timber.

To router my truss rod cavity, I use my home made router table, works pretty good.

I also decided to protect the electronics cavity with shielding paint with I ordered from StewMac, it will be another fortnight or so I imagine away. All the electronics arrived yesterday from StewMac, so most of my components are ready to go.

I am really happy with the flatness of my fretboard, all frets are really nice and level. The neck is not joined on yet, the fit is very nice and tight. Just put two coats of my home made danish oil onto the body to see how the queensland maple comes up. One coat on the neck.,......Plenty more coats to come later on, then cut and buffed on wax.

    Here are 3 pics,

Hey, thanks for that Shedhand. Trouble is, if you go too far with the gouging, there is no turning back.

Maybe! I've been toying with gouging deeper then filling with epoxy with fluorescent colouring mixed in. Going to try it out on a scrap piece to see how it comes up. [emoji41]

I took a fair bit more timber out from where my left hand accesses the high frets, just wasn't enough room there. I knew that originally with the shape, but had to change the shape slightly to give my left hand/fingers more access. I'll do pics when its all finished.

hi all, I finally finished this guitar the other day, had too many other projects in between. Just recapping, the fretboard and neck are from Hornbeam. The body is Queensland Maple. I tried to do all the trimmings in gold. The P90 pickups I bought from the Warman factory over in the UK.

I am very happy with the setup, sounds quite good.

Hi Eren and others. Thanks for the nice comments. Yes I tried to make this a very clean and uncluttered look. The two P90's sound quite good also. I've been away for a couple of weeks and happened to come by a very old acoustic guitar. a Yamaki, made in Japan I would imagine during the 70's. Top is sitka, sides and back seem to be rosewood, neck seems to be mahogany, with a rosewood fretboard. All solid timber. I got all excited when I started to google it and found how rare these are now. Today I stripped the strings, tuning keys (one had been replaced years ago). and will order replacements. Bridge has two screws missing, seems to be an adjustable height bridge. A few surface dints but in pretty good nic. Low action. Funny nut setup. The actual nut is chrome but is behind a fret, so basically a fret acts as the nut, the actual chrome nut is about 2 or 3mm behind the fret for the strings to slot in to.

I will have to take a couple of pics of this guitar and show you.
