Looks really noice! I really like the burst on the blackwood, it accentuates the grain well.

My 9yo wants to know how you get the back covers off without damaging them (his has plastic covers)

Thanks... I have another piece of blackwood lying about but I'm up for a rest for a while.

If you look at the cavity covers you can see a fingernail hold on each.

The right hand vertical edge on the smaller one and the 'top' right circular edge on the large one are taken back a little.

If they are at all difficult a small steel ruler fits easily & a little sidewards pressure as one lifts is more than enough.

Did you consider piezo for it or is it an electric only. Bent sides or cavity??

How do the p90's go with the bolt on neck? What waterbourne lacquer did you use without sucess? I have got the same problem with the warping of a cavity cover made of timber on a build I am currently working on. I was thinking that I would glue a piece of 6mm ply on the back with it screwed down flat. If anyone has other sollutions I too would be interested.

Yes I considered piezo...did some reading & decided I'm not ready yet...so it's a chambered electric.

I used it at practice tonight...we play accessible modern jazz..and yes the neck pickup was sweet.

I didn't go near the bridge tonight..it might have given the alto dude un ulcer...

I'm not sure what issue there might be with a bolt on and P90's. It sounds really good. I used threaded inserts & machine screws to fix the neck. The fitting went well and I'll use this method from now on & retro fit my other bolt-ons.

Well the water bourne thing has me tricked. I used the StewMac colourtone and it went well on the back & sides..it cracked only on the front...as I've said TWICE!!. I used the same dyes & shellac all over so I have no idea what caused the problem. My best guess is moisture trapped somewhere..

I suppose I could make the cover recess deeper and use a thicker piece. Evberything I did to one side I did to the other, but still it warped. Maybe I could laminate it to pickguard material or something.

Thanks...I'm really enjoying it at the moment.

I padded on the hard shellac...lots of thin coats fairly well diluted ie more than 50% alcohol to hartd shellac.

Tha bass player loved it. Really 'full' but clear sound on the neck PU.

Slight issue with the volume roll off..it's full at 12 o'clock but pretty much all gone by 8 o'clock.

1 meg pots from StewMac..I'm not sure what causes this but I have asked their tech guys about it.

I would have thought that a single coil, even a big one like a P 90 would need a 250k.
The rule of thumb I have heard is 250k single 500k Humbucker.
The pots are audio taper, or logarithmic, which means you get a very steep rolloff initially and a gradual one after half way. So if your pot chokes the p'up after 50 - 60 % it will be gone all of a sudden...
Unfortunatly it will change your sound, possibly make it a bit tinnier, but you can put a cap into the volume circuit to get rid of the high end, maybe the p90 will sound fine as they are pretty fat to start with.

p90's go with 500k pots
at least the duncans ive used do
they sound grunty and toppy at the same time
like a tele on steroids
very big tone on the neck

..yeah..I've always heard 'treat P90's like humbuckers' in terms of pots etc.

The 1 meg pots are supposed to attenuate less than 500k, which was the idea behind using them, but I can't reconcile that with the unusually dramatic roll off in volume.

I understand about audio taper....it's to make the changes in output and subsequent change in volume more even to the ear...maybe these are NOT audio taper..

Having said all that it's still usable just a bit irritating.
