Thumbs up Thomas Lloyd Guitars II - My 1st Guitar

After BobL inspired me with his guitar build (see HERE)… I went off and enrolled at the Thomas Lloyd Guitar School. I have since completed the course (sorry, no blow-by-blow updates as I shut myself off from computers for the entire time).

BobL has pretty much shown you the steps in the build so I won’t follow suit. Below is the finished product. However, if you have any questions regarding the build or what to see interim steps I will be happy to write them up and show pictures in this post.

I initially had the idea that I wanted to use Tasmanian Fiddleback Blackwood for the back and sides of the guitar…and I was going to do that until I saw some Black Heart Sassafras on someone else’s build. Well, I was sold…so out with the blackwood and in with the sassafras.

    Specifications:

Sides and Back – Black Heart Sassafras
Sound Board – Queensland Bunya Pine
    Neck – Queensland Maple
Head Stock Veneer – more sassafras (how can you not love the grain in that?)
    Bindings - Jarrah
    Inlay - Sassafras
Fret Board and Bridge Plate – Gidgee
Body Shape – slightly modified Classical, neck hits body at 14 frets instead of the usual 12.
Sound – strong on the mid-range and high E…the bass is soft.

Oh…and I saw the tools that BobL made for Chris (the luthier that taught me how to create a guitar) and they are absolutely awesome...well done Bob.

Oh...and I made a string winder between jobs on the guitar build...it is made of ebony from the offcuts of another student's fretboard.

Great build there, Geebung. Sass and jarrah works well together.
The jarrah binding looks thicker than norm.
Good to see you managed to snap a pic. of Chris playing your axe.

True I got all my pinkies but the timber I was going to make my guitar sides out of exploded inside my thicknesser turning itself into firewood and spitting woodchips all over the place. Now my guitar back and sides will no longer be made of the same timber.

I was not sure about the jarrah at the start - the reason being prior to oiling and polishing it looked a little dull with the sassafras - and the sassafras was a quite pale looking on the sides. However, knowing that jarrah is quite dark once treated I thought it would come out alright...and it did. The sassafras really surprised me after oiling...such a nice colour.

The binding is about 10 mm wide and 2 mm thick.

I also shot a grainy video of him playing it as well.
