Timbecon.com.au has hex head bolts and a variety of nuts including threaded and barrel nuts. Find then in the knockdown furniture section. Fast postal service too.
I used the brass threaded inserts but found then difficult to steer and get in straight.
Hope this helps.

A well known guitar builder of my acquaintence uses knock-down furniture bits from Bunneys.
Works a treat. He actually puts a little plug down the nether end of the instrument, and fixes them with a long screwdriver... very nifty indeed, and very economical too!

I use the barrel bolts from mitre10, cheap, effective, easy to get and plenty strong. If you don't like the look of them you can either use some carpet tape to stick a little mahogany cover over them so it looks like part of the neck block, or stick your label on the neck block which will cover them.
You can tighten them through the sound hole, or as as been stated through the end block, though I've not heard of anyone using a plug, I've seen people use a long allen key through the end pin hole.
I don't like those brass threaded inserts, screwing them into the endgrain of the neck is just asking for trouble, but that's just my opinion, lots of builders use them.

We are talking about attaching acoustic necks here? I think the original question was talking about electric bolt-ons? There is a USA mob who specialises with a product but not in Oz. Vintinque is their name. Check out: http://www.vintique.com/www.vintique.com/neckkits.html
I haven't found anythin similar here.

i was in bunnings fairly recently and saw them just near their bolts. i didnt look too much at them but if they are reasonable looking ill use them on this build instead of woodscrews. i think im going to be bolting it on from above (under a pickguard behind the fretboard as the neck is going a fair ways into the body, and has the neck pup on it. then ill do 2 under the fretboard for a good connection at the front of th body.

I have been using the same knockdown furniture bolts for my electric necks. I have seen then in small packs in some Bunnings. I have used the tapered aluminium inserts and grind my bolts to fit the particular job.
The best way I think is to put them in under the finger board. There is no way they will pull through that way although I have put them in from the bottom after the finger board is attached with good success. In this case I put a bit of CA glue around the thread to help lock it in but these things have got to be better than using screws. And the bolts have a nice wide head and a fine thread and the inserts are wide with aggressive thread for good holding power.

its the best there is in a class of its own
if you are a top pro or a rich man vintique is for you
more likely will get the hardware kit from here
thnx for the posts on this tho for the current build wich has angled neck it would not work
next one though i will look at putting them knockdoown bolt thingies under the finger boardray c
dunno what's more fun, buyin' the tools or usin' em'

This question of neck attachment came into my head while I was outside having a smoke just now. If you set a plate into the back of the neck (the plane in contact with the body) how thick would it need to be for threaded holes in the plate to have enough connecting strength? Not sure if I'm making this clear, imagine an internal neck plate, like the one on the body, set flush, screwed onto the neck permanently, but with threaded holes drilled in it to accept the bolts. Probably still not clear. Let me know and I'll draw a picture.
