Default Tips on maple necks please..

Hi. I am about to sand& rub a couple of maple necks - the first I've built.

I'm a bit confused. I'm thinking I should leave all the lacquer on the frets until all polished since if I score it, some water from the wet 'n dry might seep into the fingerboard & lift the lacquer.

Also the lacquer has 'pooled' a bit beside the frets .

Please give any useful tips on sanding & rubbing maple fretboards.

    Thanks,
    Rob.

in the early days fender just shipped the guitars with lacquer on the frets
a good way of getting rid of the fret lacquer is to level crown - most of it will flake off
then score and chip off what is left before you polish the frets
you don't want water on the fretboard so just use your paper dry - you'll go through a little more
pooling can be a problem and if you want it perfect you have a time consuming job leveling it all
best to get as little finish on the fretboard as you can get away with
i use wiping varnish on maple boards

dunno what's more fun, buyin' the tools or usin' em'
