    Default Tone pot wiring

Ok all you bright sparks out there,

I have nearly finished my bc rich knock off, and one last thing is screwing me up. With the tone pot turned on full it is the quietest guitar i have ever played, turn it off completely and it buzzs like a swarm of angry bees. I've looked at it a million time and can't figure out why it's doing it.

    Any ideas?

    -Chris

I had a similar problem which turned out to be a disconnected earth on my pot. Check all your earth connections with a circuit tester or multimeter. Maybe take a pic of the control cavity and someone might be able to give some suggestions with the wiring?
    Good luck,

Haven't tried the multimeter yet but i will do later. The buzzing gets quieter when i touch the metal of any pots so i know it's a ground issue. Here's a picture.

Does the third lug on the pot make a solid connection to the solder on the back of the pot? And are you confident you've got a solid ground connection to the bridge?

They'd be my first ports of call. But I agree that some pics might help.

You dont ever earth the third lug of a tone pot.

Replace the pot, Ive had some with the same symptoms, which ended up being faulty pots. It happens.

    Why two caps??

Oops ... I rushed in thinking of a volume pot not tone ... which now makes me wonder about why there is wiring shown from that lug?

Double check yourself against the wiring diagram attached by R3R ... you've got to love Seymour Duncan wiring diagrams for clarity. And if all that is correct, then Perry's advice on the pot is probably it.

I've decided i was just driving it too hard, and like most things when the amp is high and the volume of two humbuckers is high it distorts. I've turned it down and it sounds fine.

    I got my wiring from the Seymour Duncan site;

And the 2 caps are 2x .22nf ceramic caps......they didn't have any .47's at the electronics store, so in parallel they add up.

    Thanks for the input though.

nope, thats wrong. The red wire is both the source, and output. There is no need for the green wire, in fact it wont even work.

    Richard,

You do not need an output for a tone pot, This is only for a volume pot. The tone pot is just there to "bleed" off frequencys which is varied by the capacitors and the resitance of the pot (which is the variable component).

    Cheers,

    Peter

Yeah red is coming from the 3-way switch and going to the hot tip of the jack. Already complete though so you guy don't have to worry
