Im surprised you cant get the stuff in Chch.....when I left there in 1987 half the kids hanging around the CBD were sniffing the stuff.

Yoz On bindings & rosette gluing, I have been using a product called "Vise" Australian company (polyurethane) don't know if it helps

Ive successfully used both epoxy and CA for this kind of job.

Thanks everyone, I eventually found it hidden behind the counter of a plastics company that supplies the signwriting trade. Have gone ahead and glued the binding on my fingerboard! Sticks like ____ to a blanket!

anyone used weldbond?

A couple of years back I replaced the perished roof lining in one of my son's cars with a black suede like material and I used Weldbond for that ... it was material glued to a moulded compressed cardboard. It worked really well.

But I'm guessing that's not what you're contemplating doing Mongrel??

It is so 'kerfing' hard to find a substitute for "proprietry named" stuff used by manufactures. Glue is a perfect case in point, Stew Mac say Tite Bond , so what does that make it law , why not advise newbies to use Tite Bond or any glue that has the same active constituants. Or stains or finishes etc etc the list goes on. The fact that you are a newbie , means you want to follow the "rules" strictly untill you can answer those very questions for yourself. Enough of my rant.

Dix, I understand your point exactly! The Weldon was only my first problem. Particularly as I'm on the South Island of NZ I'm finding it difficult to find several of the "brands" of glues and finishes that many forumites mention in their posts. As it's my first build I prefer to use a brand that I have confirmed evidence of it's suitability for the purpose, rather than practice on my beautiful project! But just when you think you've decided on the finish you want to use, you discover there isn't a distributor for it in the South Island... I'm sure there are several reasonable alternatives available from the usual suspects (Bunnings, Mitre 10 etc.) but don't want to chance it, and can't make an educated guess with my limited experience.....

Yoz I was facing the exact same dilema (Blue mtns near Sydney), I just took a punt at Bunnings & looked for several weeks at all the paints & just went stuff it this will do & worst case scenario I have to strip , sand & spray it. (THAT WONT HAPPEN) i know myself. I would put up with a pathetic finish rather than the PARONOIA & drama of doing it again. I have been ready to paint for a month & a half & have been finding other things to do, you know the go "procrastination is my problem, it causes me great sorrow, i think i'll have to work on it,,,,,,,,, i'll work on it tomorrow"

You don't have to answer the questions for yourself.....youve got this forum and if we cant answer your questions than more than one of us in here can point you to guitar builders forums where there are people who can help you.
