To echo Simso, bending irons need to be pretty hot to work. Im 56 and still manage to burn myself occasionally. Im sure you will have some trips to the first aid with secondary students. This was part of my no complex curves suggestion. But as Simso says external mold. When the timber is dry it will hold its shape, even more so when glued to the back.
