I am so sorry to hear that type of poor attitude exists. Why do people like that not realise the young are the future and we should nurture and guide and encourage them.

Unfortunately there are plenty of dips#$ts around. They are best ignored. For our woodworking passion to survive into the future we need these young people.

If they are interested the young people must be encouraged - better that they having a go at something like that than on drugs or wandering the streets.
    Very poor attitudes displayed.

I'm very pleased to report that my square and vernier have both surfaced...in my workshop. It appears that while I was packing, they've been knocked off the bench and gone under a cupboard. Found them when I was packing stuff away from Friday. Thanks all for you expressions of concern.

My daughter was repeatedly ignored at demonstrations and stalls, and had to sit through 3 resin pour demos before she was finally acknowledged and given the handout - all MALES in the audience were given handouts, but she was passed over despite reaching out to take one.

She was later tapped on the shoulder by an elderly show visitor, and told she should not be at the show, but at home in the kitchen, because that's where women belong.

The two young men were both told, at separate stalls, that they should be at home studying, and not at the show.

I realise that people's attitudes are beyond the control of the organiser, but I'm pretty sure we won't be bothered to travel from the Central Coast to any woodworking shows in the foreseeable future.
I bet I know which resin pour demo you are talking about and I will say no more. What I did note on a positive note, were the high school displays. They were of a magnificant standard and the entries by the girl students were unbelievable. I saw several of the girls confidently talking with the public and explaining how they built their projects. The men (young & old) were very respectful and encouraging. There was a genuine exchange of ideas and views bewteen them on how they built their projects.

It is a shame that just a few misogynistic neanderthols can cast a pall over such an interesting event.

I had the pleasure of stopping by these displays today, and was lucky enough to have a chat with a few of the creators.

Their work was nothing short of superb, and it was a pleasure and honour to have the opportunity to view the work and ask the makers questions on how the various pieces were made.

Folk referenced above who make unwelcome comments to the younger generation and/or female attendees would do well to open their minds and eyes, and take in all that the show had to offer, particularly the stunning work produced by these students.

Absolutely! The student works were of an excellent standard, and the confidence of these youngsters gives plenty of hope for the future. Did anyone see which works took out the awards? I guess the winners will be posted here. I was particularly taken by the family heirloom box made by one of the young ladies there - the detail in the dovetails had to be seen to be believed.

Great to see some positive comments appearing now. Hopefully there will be more either here or on the other thread that's running in Timber & Working with Wood Shows forum.

Feckless...now there's a word I haven't heard used in a long time, and it fits this situation perfectly.

    feckless
    adjective
a feckless lot of layabouts: useless, worthless, incompetent, inefficient, inept, good-for-nothing, ne'er-do-well; lazy, idle, slothful, indolent, shiftless, spiritless, apathetic, aimless, unambitious, unenterprising; informal no-good, no-account, lousy.

I will get to one of these shows one year. However I too am amazed at the high standard of workmanship shown in student categories in various competitions and displays. Augures well for wood working in general, and just perhaps some of these feckless twits could learn a thing or two f they cared to look t their work and listen to these talented young people.

At Turnfest this year I was excited to meet a youngish (by our demographic) wood turner, Daniel, who had shared a video of a display of his grandfathers stunning segmented turnings a while back on this forum. His work on the IG table was a real credit to him, well designed, executed, and finished. Bumped into him & his Dad gain at Maleny. Sincerely hope he makes the time in his busy work and family life to nourish his soul by making.
