This is a carving set I made for a wedding present for a friend of mind getting married in a couple of weeks. The carving set I got from Carbatec, the handles I made from Rose Sheoak. The box is from some Flooded Gum floorboard scraps and some left over Silver Ash.
I cut the box sides on the bandsaw to 6.5mm thick from 19mm stock. The long sides are glued mitred joints, also cut on the bandsaw, into which the Silver Ash ends are dovetailed (half blind using my Eurojig from Carbatec with 6mm comb). I was going to key the mitres, but with the internal framing for the carving set, thought it overkill.
The lettering is simply routered in using a dremmel, filled with clear casting resin with silver sparkles from the $2 shop. I wanted white, but unfortunately the white sparkles turned clear with the resin. On re-routing the letters, I lost some of the centers, so used resin mixed with sawdust but unfortunately they came out darker.
The box and carving set are finished with Hard Shellac and EEE. The handles then got an extra coat of Shellawax Glo. All U-Beaut’s products of course. The inside of the box was sealed with Hard Shellac thinned down then coated with burgundy flocking from Timbercon.
Cheers
