Here's a little bowl I made out of Yellow Cedar for a friend of mine. I'm pretty happy with the end result, the bowl is finished with Kunos Oil.

Hi Corbs,
Beautiful bowl love the grain pattern what aera is yellow cedar local to. Is the colour due to sap wood and heart wood or something else.

Rod,
The wood was purchased as a cut/waxed blank at the Canberra Wood Show. By the looks of it the yellow is heart wood and the cream is sap wood. There was a small section of bark on the bottom of the blank so I'm guessing this blank was from a small branch/tree (~6-7" diameter).
According to Wikipedia, Yellow Cedar is a Canadian wood.

It does grow here in Aus too, but not sure of range, I know of a few cut in northern NSW and QLD. I got some from Big Stan at the last Melany Wood Show
How did you find it to turn Corbs?
Beautiful bowl. I've just gotten a heap of yellow cedar from mapleman, mostly boards and pen blank size. Sadly nothing big enough for a bowl. Will definitely try to get my hands on something big enough though. The contrast of sapwood to heartwood is lovely.
hi corbs,
very nice bowl there mate, well done
first time i have heard of yellow cedar
cheers smiife:2tsup:
Corbs,
Nice piece of timber. Nice bowl. I especially like the curving flare of the bottom of the bowl.
Never heard of Yellow Cedar makes for a nice looking bowl good Job
Thanks again guys, I've got a bit bit of Camphor in the shed which may lend itself nicely to a larger version of this. If I get time later I might mount it and see what happens :D
It will throw you off!:D
Very interesting piece. I like the look of the contrast in colours
You have made a very nice blank into an even better bowl well done.
