Sounds like you hit a brad or screw in the wood
Not necessarily, some, especially stressed, trees will absorb more soluble silica during dry spells when the tree is stressed. This silica can precipitate out forming a small grain of sand inside the wood.
Seeing sparks while using a TS is especially common from timber/trees from dry country.

Definitely did not his any nails etc and it was not from the mechanical side of the saw. The wood was Tassy Pink Myrtle. Was resawing a rather thick piece for such a small saw.
