Game of Dominoes anyone,..??

I get inspired by different things, couple of weeks ago was watching a show on netflix, 2 blokes sitting in a pub drinking and playing dominoes on the bar. Hmmm, I should make a set of dominoes. Let me work out how to do that. Why stop at making a set of dominoes, I should make a nice box to put them in to also. Maybe I should also make a few jumbo dice also, nice. Maybe toss in a couple of packs of playing cards.

This is the result. I must say it took me a fair while to make the dominoes, each is 50mm x 25mm x 8mm. Made from Hornbeam. Dice are 25mm cubed.

Box is White Cedar and Snakewood. Snakewood is a lovely timber to work with.

Very nice box and contents. I can imagine the dominos took quite a while as all those small things that look simple seem to take forever.
Do you cut your finger joints on the tablesaw or with the router?

So the dominos are double 6? I have an old set of double nines. I have only ever seen on set of double 12s. That is a big set!!

Hi Dallas and Enfield Guy, yes those domino pieces did take a while to make. Only up to Double 6. That's enough dots to put into that space. Those finger joints are made on the Gifkin finger joint jig. Works quite billiantly actually. I did make a jig myself once, but the Gifkin outfit is very easy to use. But it only does 5mm fingers, and very neat.

From products that I have seen made using the Gifkins jig it seems like a good piece of kit. Might have to have a closer look at it when I see it demonstrated at a wood show.

Hi Dallas, I like the Gifkin outfit. The finger joint jig is slightly different to the dovetail jig. There is only one cutter, as opposed to two cutters for the dovetails. First couple of times you have to get your head around the difference, and moving a spacer after each set of cuts. But its very simple though. One disadvantage of the finger joint jig is,...........and maybe someone on here can correct me. Is that it does not take a variable spacer unit to allow for 4mm to be lost when you slice the lid off. Col told me that he just rips a bit more off to try and make the fingers still look the right distance apart. A couple of boxes I have made with it, like this one here. I add an extra piece of timber after my lid is sliced off, to blend in with those other pieces at the top and bottom.
