In case Mik's reading this
I've just re-read Mik's instructions. The Whole Point is Not to Point the Boat Into the Wind. Right, got it at last.

Well, actually two steps forward, one step back.
I built a temporary water ballast system. I really appreciated Mik's advice, but want a foolproof way of getting back in, that didn't rely on... -

Hell yes, I was totally warned about that. Actually, I don't find it too hard to sail (30 minutes total so far, 10 of which were in a 15 mph wind, which was great). The chances of capsizing in the...

Over the stern?
Thanks Ian. I tried that, and tried climbing in over the bows. The only other comments I've seen say: use the wind against the sales to counterbalance your weight, or 'somebody else was there to...

Beginner Sails Beth
Thanks very much to Mik Storer. The $100 I spent on the plans for Beth must be the best value I've got from anything for a long while.
I don't know how to post videos, but here are links to two... -

Planer and 20' lengths
As usual I rushed, and only skimmed the responses above. I now see two things:
B.o.a.t suggested I buy or borrow a planer/thicknesser. Hmm. I bought a saw table, and have thrown the packaging... -

Yup, have bought a table saw - a little late
Thanks for all the answers. Over the phone, the lumber yard guessed that out of the US$550, only US$100 was for the machining. But I went out and bought a table saw, and half a dozen lengths of 8'...

I'm slowly making a Beth sailing canoe, here in New York.
I just got quoted US $520 for the timber for the rudder, and the two masts, two yards, and two booms.
Milled to the sizes shown on... -

Carlins, and Fist of Ham Strikes Again
I've put the carlins on. All good, but as usual, SNAFU - systems normal, all fouled up.
No pictures, but the following happened:
I glued in the carlins one lamination at a time, the same way... -

An idea when making the centre-board
Here's the glass cloth being epoxied to my centreboard.

Making the Centreboard
This is all new to me, so what I'm saying here will only be of use to other beginners.
Making the centreboard seemed like it was going to be a tough job. It wasn't.

Think about where to cut hatch holes
I wanted waterproof hatches in bulkheads three and four, because that creates waterproof stowage compartments, and it means less water to bail out after a capsize.
The first time I cut the holes... -

I glued one of the sides to the bottom about two inches out of place. I took this picture much later, after I had fitted the bulkheads, but it makes it easy to see the problem.
