Thanks for your informative reply. I will do as you suggest. The timber is very old grape trellis posts, beautiful Red Gum, quite hard but workable.

carbide cutter tool is good for removing the rough stuff, just wondering why I can’t use the round cutter. -

Penetrol seems really good on the metal parts of tools etc. My Father in Law used it on a bare timber stair case, not sure of the timber, about 20 years... -
