Good to know! The stains could be pre-1970's when the wood may have been only waxed so the stains might be pretty baked in.

Thanks for the tip, I’ve used the UV Osmo oil and it has worked really well. I’m amazed how good it looks. Whether the clear resin lasts as long as under varnish will be something I keep an eye on.

Thanks Rob, it sounds like the problem was that I moved through the lower grit pads too quickly. I found that I had more control of the slurry when I practised by hand so I'll go back to a lower grit...
