I haven't had much experience with wood so thank you for your input. The tree loppers said flame tree So I thought that was it. Your right it's very soft and fibrous. Might have a play....

Yeah that crack was really worrying me.
Most of the wood I use come straight from the paddock and it's free so it doesn't hurt the hip pocket while learning.

Both pieces are Australian eucalyptus. The one on the right is oiled and the one on the left is natural

Yep both same wood the one on the left isn't sealed.

The missing screw is deliberate. The plate moved when I measured it. It's very secure. No issues yet.

I used wd40 to finish as it's a first piece.
