I think the frets you have are made for a fretboard with a binding down each side. So you cut the slots, then fit the binding, then fit the frets.

It's not actually a guitar. It's a "strumstick"...
It's not actually a guitar. It's a "strumstick" and is played more like a dulcimer. (note the diatonic fret arrangement.)
