Thanks for the info. Yes, I looked at some DAR 90x45 and 70x45 perfectly straight and knot free. I hadn't considered using Radiata until I saw that. A coat of epoxy under paint wouldn't hurt either....

Thanks Ian. I have a few days off so will go for a drive and look at alternative timbers. If I had an unlimited budget of course I could use Huon, Celery or King William too! ;-)

I am keen to build an Escargot canal boat as designed by Philip Thiel, but with a 6hp outboard.
Unfortunately, the Venezia is just too big for me to construct. Sorry Mik!

    Shallow draft

Interesting discussion guys. I read the article about your trip in the RRs. It looks like I should choose a design that has shallow draft with the need to beach and go over many snags along the...

I have study plans for the Pelin designed, Beachcomber, 19' diesel displacement launch. There isn't a lot of detail, but it is a ply over timber frame design with the flare built from layers of 150mm...

The latest price at Bunnings here in Tas is $52 for 240 x 1220 x 6mm. Apart from being heavy, it looks really good, at least on the face veneers and with no voids around the visible edges. They sell...

    Murray river cruiser

Hi Bill. Thanks for the suggestion. Another owner recommended one as he uses his on similar rivers in the USA. I looked at the specs and it is around the right size, but at $200 per sheet, the...

    Murray River cruiser

I posted a question on the Duckworks Yahoo group asking for suggestions on a good (small, as it is for only one on board) design for cruising the Murray River and John Welsford reminded me of...

    More cabin space

Michael...what are the things to consider if moving bulkheads #4 and #5? I may consider moving #5 toward the stern and building the porta-potti compartment between 4 & 5, or should I leave them and...

    Strake

Michael...you'll be able to see the marks on the side of the hull every 100mm (1M full scale) for the curved strake. I'll glue one on shortly to join the dots.
