I think the noise level is quite Ok . I previously had a larger Ingersoll Rand compressor and it is quieter than that.
But Ive got tinnitus from not wearing ear muffs and I'm always saying to SWMBO ...

Another option might be to make a feature of the steel by having it chrome plated in either bright ,satin or black finish which might suit a modern design .

Looks great . Are you worried about the fragility of the sections of end grain timber abutting the knuckle of the hinge . Would a mitred corner be stronger perhaps.

How about nice sharp chisels/block plane. Glue the uncut timber to a smaller base that can be held in a vise / carvers vice then away you go

It's got some good specs and capacity but afraid I have not used one .

I have used a bit of Tas myrtle and a lot of it like yours. IMHO beautiful timber but beauty is in the eye of the beholder as they say . I never had any trouble putting myrtle over the planer or...
