I use Polyurethane, its messy but not allergenic. Sika seems to flow better for me than the others I have tried. If you don't want to finish with CA you can use wipe on poly as well.

Firstly thanks for all the helpfull suggestions. I bought a 6.3mm drill bit (ebay) and it is the perfect size to ream out the barrels. The mandrel and barrel are snug fit now.
