If you aren't an experienced paddler, 50mm lower is likely to be a good idea. The last page or two in this thread has quite a bit of discussion on that.

Paddling solo, I do as you did; I sit on the closest seat to the middle unless it's windy, in which case I kneel on the floor with my belly against the centre spreader. It's far from easy to handle...
