I did a fair bit of toolmaking when I was in the trade and found "Devcon Devtap" to be fantastic as a cutting lube on real hard to deal with metals when tapping,don't be fooled by it's clear water...

Silicon Carbide is the way to go and then you may just use a hand diamond to lap the edge.

P.S I found it best, as you mentioned, to grind a secondary edge (very small) in negative rake....
