Yeh. It's scotia. Search Tabma timber profiles. This publication shows all the standard sizes of scotia and other moulding. Stores will only stock one or two sizes.

The log came from the Bellinger valley. Most of the older logs seem to have good colour in that area. The slabs will be used for furniture and craft items.

Cut up a nice camphor butt this morning. 2.2m long and 1.4m wide. Heaps of great slabs, colour and figure. Best of all No Nails, wire or spikes.

If i's the same hickory that comes from Pecan nuts it shouldn't be a problem. Very flexible and hard to break. I cut some 2 years ago from a pile of pecan nut trees. Not sure how you will go in

I cut a lot of 325x50 on my bandsaw for the staircase market. The big advantage of a bandsaw is being able to cut the majority of the log into this size with very little left over as fall down sizes....

your diagram is accurate. Tangential refers to a line drawn at a tangent to the growth rings. Tangential shrinkage is often double radial shrinkage. It follows that changes in moisture...

Diagram A is the correct way to use quarter sawn timber in a neck and I would have thought diagram B in braces but I have often seen them the other way in spruce as the growth rings are quite rigid...

I would recommend blackwood as a proven tonewood. There's some nice sets on ebay at the moment (shameless plug). There are also a number of suppliers here who can help you out.
