That issue was what led me to choosing to go with two leg vices on my bench with one fixed on the left leg and one sliding. The drawer can then be held by both vices along two opposite sides...

For holes away from the edge, I would start a hole with a Forstner bit to about 2mm depth and then position the router to drop the bit into that hole

By setting the distance using the fence and putting marks on the edge of the bench at the required spacing which will coincide with the centre mark on my fence

But USD44 to get the first 1.25" done seems like a good deal to me. So I'll go ahead with that anyway.
