Sure looks to me as though they dyed it first with a darker color to soak into the soft grain; sanded; and then hit it with the aqua shade befor finishing.

Try some dark dye first. Then sand off the surface (the flames are softer grains and will hold the dye) before finishing. It will make the softer flame grains in the maple leap!
