Either surgical tubing through the holes or fish dental floss through there. Also a good way when replacing pots etc to keep track of their original destination.

Sure looks to me as though they dyed it first with a darker color to soak into the soft grain; sanded; and then hit it with the aqua shade befor finishing.

A plastic putty knife or body filler smoother works well when getting the stripped finish off.
You are going to remove the hardware first aren't you?

I like to go to about 150 (on boxes) Transtints are dyes and they penetrate more than a stain.

I don't blame you for wanting that tasty looking flame to just be there.
I make a lot of small boxes with tiger and bird's eye maple and they will shine with any oil that penetrates.

Try some dark dye first. Then sand off the surface (the flames are softer grains and will hold the dye) before finishing. It will make the softer flame grains in the maple leap!
