I can cut the threads just not the blanks.

I had a quick play today with an electric planer. Have tried a ROS, various grades, took longer than anticipated.

the taps to be made are quite large 50mm and 65mm and was wanting to try and keep the weight down. had also thought of using tubing if i can find the right diameter combined with a 6-7mm...

Ian where did you find the thread pattern for the coarse thread on your wooden screws.
I havent seen any metal bolts that coarse to use as taps.

Its certainly a user friendly method Derek.
I suppose it depends on how accurate or fussy some guys want to be in terms of getting the champfer uniform on all sides. I for one will give it a go
