Ships wheel plan?
i intend to make my own ships wheel for my new project
some thing like this
i've had a quick search on the net but only seem to come up with plans for wheels that are for decoration use only, i guess one could adapt the plan for real use but i would prefer to build the real thing from a proper plan.
any one know of a plan?
thanks
Richard

Yer nuts
Richard
20 foot of boat and he wants to make funny bits for it as well
(go for it mate and no, I don't have a plan. Make up your own plan ... well, for the spokes anyway. Got access to a lathe?)

i'd agree with that
it has to look the part Richard (cream leather seats, walnut dash and trimmings fancy steering wheel) hold on a minute i thought i was building myself a work boat not some fancy Gin Palace
yes i have access to a lathe, a friend of mine has one that i can use

Now, if you were building yourself a fancy, wooden bottle holder for the Scotch, I'd understand it ...
Seriously though, I think making your own wheel is a great idea, particularly seeing you have a lathe to make the spokes. The only issue would be how to do the rim and how it all fits together. Let us know how you get on.
If you're still stuck later on, give a yell and I'll do a trip to our State Library - it has a specialist maritime collection that may yield results. I'd be amazed if you can't find something on the net though (not for the first time sadly).

I googled 'ships wheel plans' and this link was the first hit
I'm not saying it's a good option, but it does suggest the plans are out there

thanks for the link Richard, i guess the plan could be used to make the real thing
just had a quick look on fleabay and came up with this ANTIQUE WOOD & BRASS SHIPS STEERING WHEEL on eBay (end time 09-Nov-09 19:26:12 GMT)
it looks like a wall hanging wheel but at least i could use the brass rings from it
