I made some salad servers for the challenge. They still get used. At the time I had no prior experience with any sort of wood, but I won't call it one of the harder ones to wortk with. Wouldn't say no to some. :cute:

Here is a link to the challenge we had. https://www.woodworkforums.com/showth...live+challenge

I' ve only worked with roots and burls-they are hard as stone . Olive needs twice as much time for serasoning , compared to other timber-high oil content.Beautiful grain.

My bit wasn't hard as stone. Nice grain though.

I get the hint... Happy to oblige, you know the drill...

Artesano, everything is relative. For European standards, olive is one of the hardest, but compared to grey ironbark it is a pushover.

This said, I have to admit I have not yet started carving anything serious with it (or anything else, for what matters ). Wonderful to turn, though.

Here is a miniature (~32x32x38mm) that Springwater carved and sent to me as a memento of that competition (thanks again, Craig).

Isn't that so cute. No he's not gonna like that word. How about whimsical? That's the word.

(Don't really need more olive. Thanks Frank. )

....sure , olive may be one of the hardests trees growing in Europe - And , just as you say , it's not such a big deal. Only I did'nt speak abut the timber from the trunk , but roots and burl - and that's a diffrent story -they are hard compared to bubinga, ivorywood
and palisander ( who said I only carved local stuff ) - and have beautiful but nasty grain.

P.S- I 'd really like to put my hands on some of your uncarvable timber....

Sorry Ivan, I did not want to be dismissive... Grey ironbark is not uncarvable, by the way, my father would not carve anything else, just very hard and dense. It is difficult to find now, though, I believe it is prohibited to fell these trees.
