he'd be better off going to a physical auction somewhere.

He'd be better off breaking down the collection into individual items, or into small groups of items you would not want to separate (like a set of something). What he has is not special - I did not see anything there that warrants buying the whole caboodle for - and most of the planes are fairly run-of-the-mill, although would be nice to own. It is just that I expect that a knowledgable Buyer is more likely to be looking for specific items only, and I cannot imagine that a novice is prepared to spend that much money on tools that (s)he knows little about.
