Jadewood & engraving

Hi folks,

i am new to this site and also to turning. I just got my Nova3000 and looks good!

i have been seraching for a type of stearite from western part of Australia called by the trade name JADEWOOD. Its kind of dark green soapstone which can be turned and carve. I wanted for turning pens. If anybody know of any stores accept mailorder, appreciate your info.

and, how do you all engrave with minimum cost on to pens?

Hello Bodhiart,
I use a local trophy shop who has a laser engraver to engrave my timber pens. Shop around because the prices will vary immensely.

You could even splash out and buy your own engraver, the lowest powered laser engraver, available on the Australian market is around $aus19,000.00.

As an importer of Jadewood in the UK, my experience is that jadewood is not suitable for pens. The success rate is poor due to the thin walls necessary for pens. It is ideal for bowls, plates etc.

I recall an enquiry about adhesive. The best type that i know is a 2 part epoxy, be sure to wipe the talc dust with a damp cloth and let dry before you apply the epoxy.
