    Default The MacGyver Table Saw

The original table saw is approximately 60 years old. Additions to it over the years include...

    • The extension table is 9mm thick aluminium from a wheelchair access scales unit. Very heavy.
    • To counter the weight, a 700mm piece of rail track is positioned at bottom left.
    • Which is supported by 50mm angle iron from the local tip.
    • Rod (10mm), from an old IV pole, is used in adjusting the extension table.
    • The rod slides in tube provided from a childs pram.
    • The locking knobs on the tube are from an old patient bedside table.
    • The hardwood fence is from a 50% off sale at Hudsons.
    • The induction motor (1.5 hp) is from an industrial floor polisher.
    • The on/off switch is an old Bakelite house light switch.
    • Threaded pipe pieces and pipe lengths serve as handles to assist in moving are from a metal scrap merchant.
    • The wheels are from a local hardware store.

All together, it works a treat!

Hi mate. I was thinking about the "unsafe" aspect of the saw today and I thought of the dowelling attachment (see below). By removing the extension table and attaching a two pronged travel bar arrangement and inserting various sized dowel bits it can become a wickedly OH&S 'no-no'. The table slides in and out on the travel bars.

Was it or is it still a common feature on modern table saws?

    What?............... and no dovetail attachment.

How about at least adding a shop-made domino attachment?

(Well done on the machine but don't let your kids use it)
