    Default Homemade Carving Mallets

    G'day,

What are peoples thoughts on homemade mallets? What timbers have people used from Australia?

    Cheers
    Matt

Haven't used mine for carvings, but they were a couple of the very first things I ever made on my lathe, and they have seen regular use ever since.

Saw someone made theirs with PVC pipe or a rubber connector as the outer layer - might try that one day.

    Cheers,
    Andrew

I made one when I first got my lathe, I use it for all my malleting(?) I made it from a piece of Brushbox, it has had a split in it but has never got any worse. I think it acts as an inbuilt shock absorber.

I have two conventionally shaped mallets which I turned on a lathe. The one on the left is red gum and the other is blue gum. Although they are both about the same size, the blue gum one is both harder and heavier. I tend to use the red gum for lighter, smaller chisel work and the blue gum for heavier stuff, but occassionally its whatever one is nearest.

    Default Mallet's

    Hi nuich & Other Turners,
Like the other Chaps, I have made 3 Mallet's, 2 for the Garage, Workshop, Shed Whatever. Both one piece, both Tea Tree Moonah, & as hard as.

My other is a bit smaller, one piece made from Boxthorn, nice and Yellow in colour, which goes with my Carving Gear. I Like to make Spoons for the Kitchen.

As a matter of interest, Geelong Carvers meet the 1st. Wed. in the Month,
@ Geelong College, Aphrasia St. Newtown, around 7.30pm.
We have approx.11 Carvers in our Group.
    Regards,
    issatree.

    Thanks all

Whittling, i like your idea on shaping multiple mallets out of different timbers to get the different weights. So simple!

From your need to emphasise that I deduce the comments you have already received...

My traditional ones are barrel shaped and made of olive, but I have evolved:

A certain 'lady' eluded to it being something other than an acorn in another thread. A case of mallet envy methinks!

Your 'interesting palm mallet' reminds me of a personal protective device as work by certain sportsmen, perhaps yours and WW's could be used in combination?

With such a small concavity? Only by extremely poorly endowed people!

I wonder how much further the establishment will tolerate our crass humour...

Did you use a model WW or work from memory?
    Reality is no background music.

There aren't too many acorns around here, but I've got a good memory.
