His work is great to see in the flesh and I find it reminiscent of Ricky Swallow's work. Swallow is actually having a show at the NGV's Ian Potter centre, National Gallery of Victoria ,that I'm really looking forward to. His show runs for a few months (starts october 16) and I strongly recommend that anybody with the remotest interest in woodcarving (who is in the Melbourne area) make an effort to see it.

p.s. Should I be changing my name to WoodcarverJosh? ;-)

great link Josh,I've been following both their careers with interest. these guys are dragging woodcarving (kicking and screaming) away from the sunday craft markets and plonking it right in the middle of the contemporary art scene. and hopefully inspiring some young players to follow their lead.
well yeah, sure, if you want to be taken seriously , and invited to better parties
what if the hokey pokey is really what it's all about?

As I am hopefully finishing my art degree in the next six weeks (if I can get my essays finished, not mention sculptures), I am looking forward to hearing less of the art versus craft debate! Now there's a topic I could write an essay on!
Both Swallow's and Gallop's work is amazing and after seeing them in the flesh it made me realise that it's not the sort of carving I would like to do. I could never equal, much less improve upon, that sort of work! I'd love the skills though!
Cheers
Josh (I'll omit both the carver and turner prefix, I don't think either are accurate anymore)

I'm with Underfoot, the work you do is your own and you should be critical of its quality for it's own sake of worth and expression not how it compares with another's take on the world.

Oh, I completely agree but every now and then you see some work and think "wow, why do I bother," well I do anyway. I don't mean these things in a negative or defeatist way I just think it's human nature to compare and unfortunately my current work for assessment (which I'm completely sick of at the moment) consists of similar objects, which makes it hard not to.
Cheers
Josh
