    Another day of sailing.
I've found that I need to watch carefully the angle of the gaff , as it goes up (and down).
The cleats work , but only when I use one halyard , then the other.
I can get the gaff up though , and that is the main thing.

Maybe this is good news week.
Last sail was with a young German girl , working across the road.
She wants to go out again , so thats good news , she is a quick learner.
But today in Portland I met a bloke who wants to go sailing on HS (he is a sailer).
So , I should be getting plenty of sailing in !.
Should be starting on Friday , weather permitting.
    Regards Rob J.

    I am soooooooooooooooooo envious.
not just about the German girl.

I should sell Teal - I just plain don't fit in her for sailing, but she's lovely to row.
The TS is at least a year from done.
The kayaks are all very well, but they aren't sailing...
    *sigh*

Well , you can allows come over for a sail !.
Just pick your weather though , its shocking at the moment.
The girl is quite a change.
Everybody else I've taken sailing accepts HS as she is.
When I opened up HS , she told me off for having a messy boat !.
BUT BUT ! , I tried to explain what happens out there in big swells , but explanations weren't acccepted , I had a messy boat.
Next time we go out its sure to be rougher than last time , and when HS does her thing , bobbing over the swells , she will hear "stuff" finding its way to the lowest point again.
I don't care really , as long as I'm sailing.
    Regards Rob J.

An interesting day so far , although my head is still spinning , I think I've had a few rounds in a washing machine.
Did the CG duty this morning , and I was surprised to hear on the radios all of the fisherman getting seasick , in a fishing competition , and coming back in to sheltered waters.
My intention was to sail out to the oil rig with my new "deckie" , but she never turned up , so I went out on my own.
I thought I would motor HS out , in to the wind , and sail home with the wind.
I didn't quite make it to the oilrig , it got just too rough , so I turned her back towards Portland .
I quickly gave up on the idea of sailing , I was hanging on for dear life , with the wind and waves behind me.
Then I realised why I was the only silly bugger out in open water !.
But we bobbed and surfed our way back , it was quite an experience !.
And silly me had a trolling line out . I got a few bites , but probably pulled their heads off on the way back , we were scooting along !.
    Anyway , lesson learnt.
If the fishermen in their expensive bits of plastic can't handle the water , good chance HS will be moving about a bit too.
    Regards Rob J.

    Ha Ha.

You need a long deep keel and a bloody great diesel, with full decks.

Won't stop you getting sea sick, but you will worry less about those pesky waves.

Sorry your deck hand didn't turn up.

Actually , I would have liked to get some sail up , but that wasn't going to happen , I had a job just hanging on.
I did see the old cray boats coming in , no real worries for them.
I don't care if someone changes their mind , and decides they don't want to come out , but common decency says that they ring me , and tell me.

I went out today , without any enthusiasm.
My arms were aching before I even started , but after getting the gaff up , and the headsails out , they hurt a lot more .
The sailing was fun , if I could ignore my arms !.
I caught a nice salmon , but put him back , and caught nothing more.
My forearms still ache , JEEZ !!.
I'm going out again tomorrow , with an old mate , fishing for snapper.

    It didn't happen Paul.
There was supposed to be 20knot winds , and up to 3 metre seas increasing , but its gusting more than that now.
Neither of us fancied drifting or at anchor , in those sort of conditions.
So now we hope to go out Monday.
    Paul , I've been fishing with a handline .
Thats ok most of the time , but when I catch something big they break the line.
Is it possible to have a short rod with a quality reel , that I could carry and use on HS ?.

Sorry you missed your day out Rob.
Yes you can buy short rods.
Any good tackle shop should have rods 4ft or so.
Quality of reel will depend on how deep your pockets are, but there is no need to spend a fortune.

Paul I've tried 3 big shops , and the shortest rod is about 6ft , and very light.
Would I find something on the internet? , what do I ask for ?.

Rob, I am pretty sure Jarvis walker were making short boat rods not long ago.
I think the range was called, "white tip", not sure about that.
Basically ask for what you want mate.
Rod of X length, with approx line rating. Sports stores have supplier catalogues and are usually connected to those suppliers by the internet.
