Timber harvesting rules?
It never really occurred to me that one could freely collect timber from forests until reading some posts here, but what implications are there (I'm in Vic) and what should I be aware of.
I'm not talking of felling trees, just stuff to turn or small <10" log sections to rip.
What do you guys do?

Never heard of that before,in NSW state forests normally you can get a fire wood collecting permit, which means just salvaging timber that has been fallen already in a logging coup after the loggers have finished, to cut down timber you would need a whole lot more than a permit.

I'm with inter, and I'm aware that there are many with a different view. IMHO you should consult the land owner. Where the landowner is a public authority they will also have a policy on the subject. Royalties, salvage and collection permits are good value and you won't need to wear a ski mask.
cheers

It's illegal to take anything from a national park but you can get permits for many state forests. If you only want little bits find someone who removes trees.

Please don't quote me but I'm pretty sure Victoria made some rules about removal of both standing and fallen trees over 40cm in diameter without a permit.
PS I ignore them.
