mens shed toy car

I was asked recently by a local mens shed to design some wooden toys they could make and sell.
this is no.1
stack laminated and shaped from a single 19mm red cedar board
I designed it to be very simple, strong, cheap and easy to make.

the toy was designed so that it (hopefully) would'nt end up at the tip when the kids were done with it.

Pretty spiffy for a mens shed. That's what they should make at Knox too. I'm sure most of the toys they make aren't really appreciated by kids. At least with that car the Dad will play with it.

I dont mean this in a nasty way at all.There is a lot of skill and artistic ability required to produce something like that,as you know.

That's true. There is a rocking horse group that makes pretty nice stuff. But the toy making is pretty ordinary. I don't think they relise that kids are pretty sophisticated these days.

Can Barbie or Ken fit? (and where's the steering wheel? ) ( maybe the mobile phone can sit there? )

it's mostly not a problem Aussie, the nice thing about stack laminating is that the curves and forms are designed into the laminations, if they can cut out the patterns, glue them together and remove the steps, that's the shape they will end up with.
The smooth finish is just a matter of time spent sanding, and most of the blokes I've come across in mens sheds don't mind sitting around yacking and sanding for a few hours.
btw, these aren't designed to be mass produced,(just a few every now and then,they're collectors items) and most of the blokes in the shed up here don't want to be on a production line.

Amazing what an artistic mind can do even when applied to a mundane subject like a toy car, isn't it? The original is a sculpture, the copies... well, they are beautiful toys.

I haven't drawn up the patterns yet Oz, I'll post them here when I do,
I'd be interested to get some feedback if you make one
